There are two kinds of spousal/partner support:
Temporary support in Santa Clara County is determined in much the same way is child support, based on a standard formula. Temporary support is supposed to provide for short term needs of the non-working (or lower earning) spouse/partner.
Permanent support is usually fixed at the end of the case is a complex issue requiring analysis of at least 14 different factors under the Family Code, including but not limited to: length of the marriage, age of the parties, health of the parties, skill set of the parties, ability to work, value of the property and other assets disbursed during the dissolution.
