The State of California permits all manner of property agreements between persons contemplating marriage, already happily married, and divorcing spouses.

With limited exceptions, this is the straight contract law and has the widest latitude for creative settlement to meet the needs of the parties. (e.g., it is possible to trade a pension or 401(k) for equity in the house, as long as the transaction is substantially equitable to both parties.)
